Zoom now requires all upcoming, previously scheduled, PMI meetings, and webinars to include a password for security purposes.
Having a password on your Zoom video conferencing prevents unwanted access from non-participants and pranksters.
Where is my Zoom Meeting Password?
For scheduled meetings, the Zoom meeting password will be found in the invitation.
The password is also included in the link to join the meeting by default, although this can be disabled.
Note: For Docket users, we’ve made sure to include your meeting password in the ‘Click-to-Join’ button within the Schedule and Agenda views. Be sure to enable “Embed password in meeting link for one-click join” within Account Settings for a seamless experience.
For instant meetings, hosts can find the meeting password in the invite section of the participant controls within the Zoom client.
To minimize any potential disruption to your scheduled meetings, Zoom hosts can add passwords to existing scheduled meetings before the change takes place.
Changing a Zoom Password for a Meeting
Zoom will automatically generate a random numeric string as your meeting password. You can change this password to one of your choosing.
To change your Zoom meeting or password, sign in to the Zoom via your web browser and navigate to Meetings.
Click the Topic of the meeting you would like to update the password for. On the meeting screen, find the “Edit This Meeting” button at the bottom of the screen. There, under Meeting Options, you will see the meeting password in an editable format. Be sure to save your settings before leaving.
When scheduling a new meeting you can add a Zoom meeting password to the meeting or webinar. If the meeting is scheduled for after the change takes effect, the password you set will still be saved.
Changing your Zoom Personal Meeting Password
A password will also need to be set for all Personal Meeting Rooms (PMIs) if one has not already been set.
Navigate to the Personal Meeting Room Tab and find the “Edit This Meeting” button at the bottom of the screen. Just note that changing your PMI password will change the password for all meetings using this room.
Selecting a Strong Zoom Meeting Password
Account admins can set custom password requirements at the account-level in the Account Settings, while individuals can change the password used for their personal meeting IDs (PMIs) by going to Meetings > Personal Meeting Room > Meeting Options.
While admins are given the option to require special characters for passwords, this can lead to overly-complex passwords that may present a problem for your meeting guests.
The FBI recommends opting for longer passphrases using a combination of common words. In addition to being more easily remembered, longer passphrases require greater computing power to crack. Example: DocketAwesomeMeetingsBest
Enable Zoom Meeting Join Link with Password
By default, Zoom will embed the meeting password into the meeting and webinar links. Participants who use these links will not be prompted to enter a password.
This setting helps your guests get into the Zoom meeting easier, but it can be disabled at the account, group, or user level.
To double-check this setting, you will need to go to your Account Settings page, and find ”Embed password in meeting link for one-click join.” If it turned on, all meetings within your account will now have a password embedded within the join link. Be sure to select “Lock” to apply this to all users within your account.
